Why do we like this?
If you've read my previous review of Teengirl Fantasy's TGIF EP, you would definitely label me as a fan. However, after giving 7 AM a few tries, I don't know if I can say that anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it just isn't as interesting. 7 AM is a bit more blurry and a bit more vague than the previous EP. The songs seem to drag on a bit, and it's easy to lose interest.
I really wanted to like this album; the idea of taking the pop and R&B hits we grew up with and sampling those in a totally new context is intriguing, fun, and original. But the album starts off with super mellow and dreamy "Vibes," which builds a beat but doesn't amount to anything.
The album starts to finally pick up some momentum on the track "In The Rain," but the standout is "Floor to Floor" which was already a track on their previous EP. The second half of the album is more engaging than the first, but each song tends to end with little reward.
The last track, "Cheaters," is different from the rest because they use a prominent sample with audible vocals from The Love Committee and build on that instead of creating their own foundation. Perhaps this track is the most successful because of its relatable song structure, or because the vocals seem familiar. But what this track does best is exhibit one of my favorite qualities about their music; while it gives off an ambient vibe, it still draws you to the dance floor.
I'm not writing this band off just yet. I'm hoping they can focus the next record because ambient doesn't have to mean boring.
