It's clear Teen Daze, the moniker for Canadian electronic musician Jamison Isaak, has a geeky side to him. He's already tweeted his love for open-world farming game Stardew Valley and now throws in a cheeky reference to an area of the Final Fantasy world with "Kilika." It makes a lot of sense really, as he's busied himself creating richly textured and atmospheric soundscapes that capture the sensation of escaping into far off lands that games often provide.
It's a feeling he's captured in name as well. "Kilika" comes from newly released album Themes for a New Earth, follow-up to this year's earlier release Themes for Dying Earth. That album had a nominally darker tone to it which is eschewed for sheer prettiness here. Light percussion underscores twinkling keys and a gorgeously toned guitar line that dances, bends, and grows as the track flutters and soars its way along.
It's a common instinct, to link music with the phenomena around us. Often that takes the form of the the natural world as we seek an aural manifestation of the beauty around us. Teen Daze has no trouble invoking these images with his vivid and evocative pieces. It's moving and exquisite and makes good on the promise of its title. Themes for a New Earth is out now through Isaak's own label FLORA.
