Australian musician Szymon Borzestowski was from Newcastle, and at 23 years of age, lost his battle with depression. At the time, I remember seeing messages of consolation flooding the Facebook feed of his younger brother, who played around Newcastle locally (and who now drums for Gang Of Youths).
Szymon was an incredibly gifted singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who started receiving attention when his family released his posthumous album Tigersapp.
We have been treated to a visual for album track “Floods,” created by artist and filmmaker Casual Psychotic. The intricate musicianship, and introspective lyrics display a wisdom far beyond that of many a 23-year-old, with the animated video serving as a perfect accompaniment to the utterly beautiful soundscape Szymon created.
A band comprised of Szymon’s family and friends will play a special performance at this year’s Splendour in the Grass, in honour of him. Try and catch it if you can.
