Why do we like this?
Spin's afternoon party at Stubb's last Friday was one hell of a backyard bash. 80s synth masters O.M.D., London's The Kills, and New York's TV on the Radio took over the iconic Austin venue for an exclusive show that featured some surprises.
O.M.D. presented a few choice classics, including of course, "If You Leave," and was even joined by Moby on bass for "Souvenir," a song he remixed in 1998. He also played along on "Enola Gay."
Next was The Kills -- Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart -- respective codenames "Hotel" and "VV." Struggling through sound issues (the two stormed off the stage after a couple songs) the duo did their best to keep their cool and presented an impassioned set featuring new cuts from their upcoming album Blood Pressures, out April 4.
After seeing Alison front Jack White's Dead Weather for the better part of the last two years it was strange (and honestly less exciting) to see her return to The Kills. Although I enjoy their edgy yet quirky sound, Hince simply doesn't provide the same kind of stage presence as White. The Kills just don't seem as raw as they did on Midnight Boom, especially after Hince married Kate Moss and even tried to include her in the group, to Mosshart's dismay. You have to wonder what effect that had on their chemistry.
Headlining the party was TV On The Radio, who's new album Nine Types of Light is out April 12. With unbridled energy, Tunde Adebimpe strutted across the stage as Kyp Malone effortlessly shredded away on his guitar. While bassist Gerard Smith is being treated for lung cancer, drummer Jaleel Bunton filled in on bass while Death Set's Jahphet Landis took over on the drum kit. Burning through a crowd pleasing set that featured favorites "Dancing Choose" and "Staring at the Sun," the band closed out the afternoon with "Wolf Like Me."
