Sounds like:
James Blake,
How to Dress Well
Why do we like this?
Small Plates Records describe Chicago's Supreme Cuts as what would happen "if How To Dress Well's balls dropped and he made a love child with James Blake while tripping acid in the back of hazy, laser light infested club." Really? Well let's look at that shall we?
"Amnesia" and "Issues" are two tracks that have been leaked from the yet-to-be-released Trouble EP. Sure enough, "Amnesia" is Blake-esque. Whirring with a compulsive half-second vocal sample like CMYK, its tight, jarring shreds of sound make you feel like you've put your head into a washing machine. Echoes, doom-like slurs, and meek drums tickle the edges, running errands in aural space like fireflies. Stream "Amnesia" here.
If that sounds like a fairly challenging listen (which it is), then "Issues" is the relief, channeling the How to Dress Well parent of this love offspring. Relaxed, chill, almost draining due to its looser arrangements and muffled, sunken drops, it's ripe for some kind of armchair euphoria. Mr. and Mrs. Cuts' filthy flits and innocuous samples build with brilliant ease to their climax, again reminiscent of Blake. However, with the unusual thrill of a yawning, echoing backdrop, both artists fill accurately the monster hip niche assigned by Small Plates Records. Good job.
Watch out for Trouble. It's due out this summer, date to be announced.
