I'll start by saying this is not exactly the musical output that you'd expect from a band with a name like Sunflower Bean. The Brooklyn trio have somehow managed to take a riff-heavy classic rock sound and sift it through a 2015-indie filter, with frantic, exciting results.
First single "Wall Watcher" opens on a thick, crunchy bass riff, backed by loaded percussion. Before you get too comfortable, the heavy intro gives way to the thin, almost tinny -- but by no means meek -- vocals of Julia Cumming (also on bass duties), immediately shifting the track to a fuzzier garage sound.
The psych-punk influence is unsurprising consider the band cut their teeth in the DIY New York scene, and while it's by no means a new or even 2015-specific sound, it's a refreshingly punchy, not to mention fun listen from the upcoming band.
Sunflower Bean will be releasing their debut album Human Ceremony on February 5th 2016 via Fat Possum Records. Pre-order it here.
