Why do we like this?
It's not too often that I get to shed some light on local talent here in my hometown of Albuquerque. Despite that, there is definitely a growing hip-hop movement, as Albuquerque has long been a popular stop for many a hip-hop hopeful and legend, with artists like Sage Francis, Atmosphere, and Talib Kweli making their way to the desert.
Another artist who has not only found his way through Albuquerque but managed to make it his current home is Summon. A member of the New Cocoon family, Summon has managed to hook up with some stellar producers like SMEAR and CHUKCHEE and lay down some super laid back, trip-hop inspired tracks. While Summon has released a few solo albums on his own, his newest album, Scapegoat, has been released on Sage Francis' label Strange and Famous, and is definitely worth checking out.
The lead track off the album is called "EVE in TIDE" and features a DJ Shadow-inspired beat colored with layers of piano, crickets, and turntable scratching. It serves as the perfect canvas for Summon's super smooth delivery as he shares his rhymes filled with enough metaphor to almost classify him as a beatnik poet. With influences from Jazz to hip-hop, Summon shows what the art of hip-hop is all about.
