Why do we like this?
Strange Birds claim to be inspired by the "multifarious sounds of the California coast", though to be honest, I'm not exactly buying it. Their sound is warm and fuzzy, and while the California coast is certainly not the Northern Atlantic, I still associate it with a jagged, tumultuous seaside. Perhaps I'm focused too much on Santa Cruz, and not thinking enough of San Diego. Whether you see any validity to that observation is up for discussion, but personally, I'd rather find myself listening to this while drifting to sleep in a wooden cabin...on the coast. Dammit. I'm back to the ocean! Alright, so there's a coastal element. It's just that it's one of safety in the midst of storminess.
Aidin Sadeghi and Bret Leinen compose the two-man duo that is Strange Birds. The majority of their work sounds distinctly like that exhibited by Coldplay in their songs "Parachutes", "We Never Change", and in particular, "Easy to Please". At the same time, however, Strange Birds obviously don't have Chris Martin's distinct voice leading the show. Indeed, there are a number of elements that set them apart, including the persistent presence of clean and round acoustic guitar strumming to a clean and upbeat, jazzy cadence.
I don't expect to see Strange Birds taking the world by storm with any notable speed, but I haven't much doubt that in time, they'll build a steady indoor fan base. Their EP is available for download by following the link below.
