Stefan Wesolowski cold-emailed me his new state-backed Polish classical project, Liebestod. It sounded the furthest from anything I might like, so naturally I was intrigued.
This shit is actually really dope. Like the soundtrack to a pensive drama, Stefan builds moods through pointed repetition and commitment. The shortest song out of the bunch is the title track, sweeping and majestic.
Important Record, probably one of the better names for a label in a while, has this to say about the project:
"The title itself is derived from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde which says a lot about Wesolowski's primary inspirations. Liebestod shows a tremendous amount of respect for classical music but Wesolowski is far from making literal references to it. Wesolowski shows his own unique musical language; rough and radical at some points, yet full of intense nostalgia and beauty."
Sidebar (because I had to): Why in the hell doesn't the US invest in the arts like Europe? It's a rhetorical question, but ask yourself what popular music in this country might sound like if Obama commissioned Madlib or Venus X or whoever for albums or mass live performances?
