Why do we like this?
Way back when, Stars enlisted the help of their (former) Arts & Crafts label mates to pull together what I maintain is still one of the best remix albums to date, Do You Trust Your Friends. So, I was pretty confident that Eight And A Half would do a good job as well.
Which begs the question, who are Eight And A Half? This is the first time I've heard of them, but they boast members from Broken Social Scene and The Stills. I'm having a hard time figuring out whether they literally have 8.5 members -- blurry photos seem to indicate this might be the case, so let's pretend just for fun.
The next question that raises is how many folks were actually involved in this remix. It's a question I'm generally curious about when it comes to one "full band" remixing another. Was it just one member? Or did they literally sit down and flush this thing out together?
Regardless of how they did it, I'm quite enjoying this take on the original. "Backlines" was of course featured on Stars' most-recent album The North, released on ATO Records. In my mind it was always missing a little something, and ultimately this version leaves my eardrums more fulfilled. Perhaps you'll agree.
