I'll Snap You Like a VHS Tape
St Vincent has introduced us to a far more aggressive side of themselves with their Daddy's Home project and with "Down" we see that aggression focused like a beam.
A slow-building aggressive sound is always good in songs — it's a beautifully cathartic feeling when a song encapsulates that moment of boiling over for you and also guides you through the moment.
This song holds your hand and walks you to the door, gives you the batt, and asks you to swing. It's all about the payback, layered over with nostalgic blues guitars, hard-hitting 90's club samples, and a funk-centric central sound. It's a 'get to the house, burn their clothes and throw their furniture through the window' kinda sound and it just feels so good.
Revenge is a dish best served rocking.
Lastly, the music video is a dope 90's inspired spy/revenge film and you should watch it!
