St. Vincent: a bad ass but melodic chanteuse. Tom Waits: a bad ass who's managed to so redefine melody (at least singing-wise) that the form is often unrecognizable when he's through with it. And yet, St. Vincent's live cover of Tom Waits's track "Big Black Mariah" works in all its bad ass glory. There's something about the discord, the screech of the guitars combined with her gasping, growling singing, that makes me revel in the intentionality of it. Which, when covering Tom Waits, is exactly the tactic one should take.
