Spirit Faces is the moniker of Sydney multi-instrumentalist Pete Covington, who recently stepped out on his own after performing in a number of local acts (including a personal favorite Valar). His debut single "Hurts Less Than Heartbreak" took me awhile to get into, but I eased my way into his music given its intriguing complexities.
I have a feeling that Spirit Faces will be the ultimate slow-burner project, and "Hold It Down" is a prime example. While it's not as quirky (it's essentially grand piano and vocals -- both natural and a Kanye-esque auto-tuned chorus from Zebra Zap), there's something beautifully confronting about it. Although it's only a bit over two minutes long, this track takes you on a journey, and you'll need at least a few listens to really let it sink in.
Released through fresh new label Teef, Spirit Faces' debut EP Bedroom Music will be out in the coming months.
