Spelles' new track "Rib Cage" is indie rock with a twist, and while it's not my usual thing, I'm really digging how punchy this tune is.
Spelles is Los Angeles' Kathryn Baar -- you might remember her lively 2014 single "Bird in a Cage." Trading acoustic strums for distorted riffs, "Rib Cage" opens with a huge, stompy, clap-along beat. The distinctly grunge-inspired melody is sharp and brooding, adding to the cool confidence of the atmosphere.
I love tracks like this: simple beats, heady riffs, and a melody that doesn't sacrifice strength for catchiness. Oh, and that sweet, sweet guitar solo.
The artist had this to say about the song's creation: “‘Rib Cage’ was my reaction to a moment where for the first time I felt like my best wasn’t good enough. I started writing it on just the A-string on my guitar, and it felt really primal and spooky.”
Keep an eye out for more from Spelles in the coming months.
