I've been following Spelles on here for a while, and with every new release, she cements herself as an exciting new voice in female-fronted dark pop. The L.A.-based artist now returns with "Oh, the Monsters," following on from previous singles "Wild Heart" and "Rib Cage." This is a deep, catchy, utterly intriguing dark pop offering.
The track shows off a unique flair, blending a haunting, gothic darkness with almost folky, rockabilly-inspired rhythms. Once again, I am totally mesmerized by rich fullness of Spelles (real name Kathryn Baar)'s voice. Immediately demanding, her powerful voice carries the brighter melodic phrases with just as much power as the slow, rumbling passages.
Spelles just dropped her self-titled debut EP just last week on October 30. If you dig this track, I'd highly recommend checking out the full five-track release.
