New Zealand is churning out some hot like fiyahhhhh artists at the moment. In fact, this is the third review from New Zealand I've done this week, and I'm not even sorry.
This time, the soulful, electronic outfit that is Sorceress has caught my attention, and hopefully yours as well. Citing "creation eternal" as their main influence, Sorceress was founded in 2011 by vocalist Rachel Fraser and producer Isaac Aesili, and has quickly evolved into one of the most widely respected electronic soul acts in New Zealand.
Much like Australia's Hiatus Kiayote, Sorceress explores new directions in soul electronica, making excursions into synth-based jazz textures and deep subterranean basslines, and marrying these with intricate melodies, tight beats, and sultry, soulful vocals.
Also be sure to check out other up-and-coming New Zealand natives such as Wallace, Fortunes, and Bailey Wiley.
