Sonnymoon is a name to remember. The duo comprised of Anna Wise from the Bay Area and Dane Orr from the East Coast have been quietly and painstakingly crafting their debut album for Plug Research since releasing the free Golden Age EP that first got them noticed in late 2010.
They've put the time to good use. Whereas their free EP sounded a bit like experimentation gone right, their latest EP 2012 and their forthcoming debut album sound very intentional and deliberate. They've made great advances at finding their sound, a soothing and spacey mixture that never sounds too jarring but is far from traditional.
"Just Before Dawn," the only cut from 2012 that will also appear on their eponymous debut, is probably their grandest composition to date. An eight-minute epic featuring the string maestro Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, the track is a beautiful examination of death.
I believe 2012 will be the year many people get turned onto the cosmic appeal of Sonnymoon.
