Why do we like this?
I've been digging Sonny and the Sunsets since I heard their kinda sexy, kinda buzzy single "Too Young To Burn" a couple years ago. I've been impressed with front man Sonny Smith since I learned that the San Francisco musician was a serious jack-of-all-artistic-trades, popping up all over the city with art installations and new musical projects.
Smith's latest single with his band, "Pretend You Love Me," is off their upcoming release, Longtime Companion, out June 26. Something of a departure from the surf rock sound of previous efforts, Longtime Companion is billed as a country album. If this track is any indication, we can expect far more than that. Layers of slide guitar, flute, and Neil Young-esque vocals combine to form a sound that's tinged with the bittersweet melancholy of the best traditional country, with the creative departures that tend to make Sonny and the Sunsets so interesting.
If you didn't consider them a band to watch before, consider your radar updated.
