So masterful are the vocals in the sultry a cappella opening bars of this track, you'd be forgiven for thinking they belonged to Nina Simone. That is, in fact, exactly what I thought when I heard it last night on a teaser for a new BBC2 show, until Shazam brought me swiftly up to speed with the name Son Little.
Having had a nosy into his SoundCloud (or, at least, that of the label he's just been signed to, Anti Records) I was surprised to learn how little known Mr Little (formerly known as Aaron Livingston) really is. With a mere 4.8K plays on this absolute treasure of a tune, it seems he's just getting started, despite his debut track "Cross My Heart" having reared its head last November.
In "Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches," Livingston's delicious timbre is complemented by smooth percussion, a bluesy bassline, funky guitar work, and some stunning soulful harmonies that make for a truly outstanding future soul offering. This man deserves to be seriously big news.
