Why do we like this?

The risk of releasing a cover of a popular song and hearing the phrase “not as good as the original” is all too real for any artist who is daring enough. On Friday, September 22nd, Soccer Mommy’s Sophia Allison took that risk with her cover EP Karaoke Night. Spanning multiple genres and artists, Soccer Mommy takes her influences and makes an EP that serves as an exception to the phrase “not as good as the original.”

The first track “Here” sticks out as a highlight. Originally by 90’s indie shoegaze band Pavement, Allison’s subdued vocals serve as a delicate instrument to carry the simple, yet heartbreaking melody penned by Stephen Malkmus. The opening line “I was dressed for success but success it never comes” tugs at our heartstrings as we can relate to the feeling of not feeling like enough, no matter how much we try to be at times.

The jangly, effervescent guitars add to the feeling of despair as they build up into the second verse, separating itself from the original which stays on one sonic level throughout the track. Allison asserts that she can stay true to her influence while adding some originality to the classic 90’s track.

Soccer Mommy’s cover of “Here” is full of shoegaze guitars and ethereal vocals, sure to have old and new listeners satisfied.
