Why do we like this?
As cheesy as it sounds, Melbourne five-piece Smile make me want to do just that. It's not particularly happy music (it's actually slightly melancholic at times), but it's done with a twinkle in the eye. It's honest. Formed just last year, the band has begun developing a local following after playing a number of shows over the past few months.
Smile claim an affection for 90s guitar fazer and fuzz, and they're not joking. This fact is abundantly clear from the opening chords of "Born Again," a jangly, lo-fi pop track which will appeal to fans of Real Estate (although their music is slightly rawer in its makeup). The tempo change towards the track's later stages is awesome, as are the sweeping guitars and laid-back vocals.
To date, Smile have dropped two double-sided singles, both of which can be streamed on their Bandcamp. Give them a listen, I might have found you your new favorite slacker-band.
