Melbourne band Smile has been an absolute favorite of mine since I was introduced to their music early last year. After delivering their debut album Life Choices, the guys have put together a new two-track release, and its lead single "BLVD" is premiering here on Indie Shuffle today.
This brand of slacker-rock can come across as a bit lacking if done poorly, so I'm always impressed when the genre is done really well. Smile is a band that always manages to pull off that laid-back, softly spoken feeling that others struggle with, and "BLVD" is the perfect example of this.
On the track, Pete Baxter's heartfelt vocals stand out, being almost dragged along by some suitably jangly guitar and relaxed percussion. This is one of those tracks you'll get stuck right under your skin, while you find yourself whistling along to the subtle choruses.
BLVD (and it's B-Side "Ruby") will be the first release for new Melbourne label Smooch Records.
