I only recently heard the term "Scandipop" to refer to the Scandinavian electropop scene. Norwegian singer Siri WÃ¥lberg might be soon emerging as the queen of Scandipop, perhaps even stealing the crown from the likes of Lykke Li. WÃ¥lberg has an impossible name to spell and pronounce, so we're all glad that she chose moniker Sissy Wish to make things easier on all of us. Album "Beauties Never Die" is her third full-length, one that took two years to reach the U.S. (It was originally released in November 2007, released last year in the states...and still has yet to reach the masses!)
After the first listen, I was a little shocked at how much I liked it. Synth, electronic pop beats, childlike female vocals, combo piano/guitar rock, foreign-born...on papers, it seemed a little too formulaic. In fact, lots of reviews compare Sissy Wish to Swedish pop phenom Robyn, who enjoyed wild success in the 1990s.
But the lighthearted, upbeat tracks on Beauties Never Die vary so much in style and sound (from doo-wop '50s beats to acoustic choirs) that it might be impossible to pinpoint all of Sissy Wish's influences. WÃ¥lberg is a relentless and inventive musician, constantly pushing herself to do more with less. Fun fact: you can hear her tap dancing on tracks "Yayaya" and "Milk."
Her fourth album may or may not be done already (hopefully it won't take two years to reach our American ears), and I wouldn't be surprised if it stretched the genre of Scandipop even further.
