I listen and critique such a large amount of music that over time, it has become harder and harder to find songs that blow me away. Sometimes I feel like I’ll never be surprised or stunned again. But then I found this track from Shamir, and I was immediately addicted to it. Something pulled me in as soon as it started and just never let go.
He combines so many influences and sounds like a mixture of many different artists. Some parts of “On My Own” are reminiscent of his older music packed with electric and dance energy, but other parts feel new as he experiments with higher notes and more of a soft pop sound. But the bottom line is that it’s difficult to compare him to anyone or anything else. Like the title says, he’s on his own.
Artists need to keep pushing and expanding genres beyond the mainstream sound, and Shamir shows that pop can stretch far beyond a particular box. The only words to describe him fully are eclectic and original, which are two words every musician should strive to be.
