Why do we like this?
The UK rap scene is going through an interesting period right now. The Streets are no more, Roots Manuva and Kano haven't received the international recognition they deserve, and Dizzee Rascal has become, to put it nicely, stale. Many of the older statesmen have moved on too, either retreating from the scene they helped create or chasing the all-mighty dollar in the US. The new breed are making their mark, but the likes of Tinie Tempha, Labrinth, and Professor Green are more commercial hip-hop than the true grime-influenced UK scene. Which leaves us with the underground.
Jhest, Skinnyman, Lowkey, Ghetts, Skepta, Verb T, Devlin, the list is endless -- as is the talent -- but one name beginning to garner attention is West London MC Scrufizzer. Signed to Black Butter Records' label, Scrufizzer's latest single is the booming grime track "Kick It." There's a touch of Dizzee about Scrufizzer, with his colorful lyrics and similar delivery, but it's the bass-heavy beat from Zed Bias that turns "Kick It" from run-of-the-mill to must-listen.
