Much to my chagrin I have a real life job that keeps me from spending my days perusing through new and old music like I would rather be doing. Therefore, it took Drake for me to get up on Sampha. After providing arguably the best moment on Nothing Was The Same, Sampha cemented a space in my brain as a premiere modern soul provider.
His 2013 EP Dual was stuck on my turntable for weeks. I love the way he is able to convey and articulate soul that taps into the spirit of folks like Roberta Flack and D'angelo via aesthetics that are very much of now.
"Slow Lights" is an instrumental sketch he's teasing us with in anticipation of his upcoming LP. Glitchy and filled with a gritty fog, the track feels like a serene flight above a post-apocalyptic metropolis.
