I don't remember scrambling to review something as quickly as I currently am, but Sampa the Great's new mixtape is just that good! After being introduced to her via her verse on Wallace's recent jam "Beauty," we haven't had to wait too long to hear more from the Zambian-born, Botswana-raised rapper, who now resides in Sydney, Australia.
Her mixtape is full of engaging and, at numerous times, stunning music, which takes me back to the genre's golden era of the 90s (I'm a long-time hip-hop fan). There's nothing dated about it though, it's just of a different quality to a lot of new hip-hop being turned out.
The production from Australian beatmaker Godriquez is absolutely top notch, sculpting the perfect platform for Sampa's uniquely powerful rhymes, which possess an incredibly hypnotic quality.
The fact that this mixtape was premiered on the legendary Okayplayer website should not be ignored; this is hip-hop of the highest quality. Expectations will be sky high when Sampa the Great releases more work in the (hopefully) near future. Check out the whole mixtape here.
