Grime always has had a bit of a fascination with oriental music, starting off with Wiley and Jammer's "Sinogrime" experiments in the early noughties, and now being carried on by some of the key figures of grime's new wave, chief among them Slackk and Samename.
Samename's debut Yume EP, for the always excellent Pelican Fly label, certainly has its oriental moments, although with this being Pelican Fly, there's nods to more than just sinogrime, with a multitude of influences at work.
The standout track is "Sakura," which flips Ironsoul's "Chinese Water," a famous grime sample, as Samename told Fact:
"With re-writing that melody from ‘Chinese Water’ I thought it’d be interesting to flip it, use Japanese instrumentation on a Chinese melody and then expand upon what had already been done in order to make it my own."
