Why do we like this?
While they might look like your standard neo-folk project, born on the image of popular collectives First Aid Kit and The Staves, Icelandic trio Samaris are far from your usual suspects. For one thing, it's not the folk genre in which the talents of these teens lie: it's electronic trip-hop.
Featuring an eclectic combination of mournful clarinet, distorted electronics, urban percussive elements, and distinctive vocals, Samaris are perhaps one of Iceland's most refreshing recent exports. With lyrics culled from 19th century Icelandic poems, their sound is both ancient and ethereal in essence and contemporary in atmosphere, which I think makes for a fascinating listen.
Having already released their eponymous debut, word has it that a brand new record will follow in the fall.
