French producer Sam Tiba has just released his sophomore EP, Samuel. As a part of Bromance records, he's in incredibly good company – Brodinski, Gesaffelstein, Club Cheval (of which Sam is one quarter of), Louisahhh, and many more have called Bromance home. Notorious for producing some of the best (and certainly most identifiable) French electronic around, Sam's latest single “Déguisement” is no exception.
Opening on an eerily tinny beat, layers slowly tip-toe in, including a hip-hop bass drum, vocal loop, and synth. When the beat drops, a serious groove begins. Sam has spoken of the emotional outlet that the EP came to be, and you can really hear that through the melodic tones.
There's such a unique soundscape here, and it takes a couple of listens to piece it all together. At first, I found myself looking for a depth or strength in the individual layers, but I found it in the track as a whole. The sparsity and glitchiness is not only produced with finesse, but it sure as hell is different to anything else I've heard.
Check out the unnerving, gorgeous and utterly strange video clip here.
