"What I Know Now" is a mature, electro-pop entry that's just as smooth and vibey as it is yearning for acceptance in a new world of electronic music.
Sakima, who aims to create a narrative for LGBTQ+ individuals within the context of pop music, shows incredible power in his latest release. "What I Know Now," which has additional production from Moving Castle mainstay AOBeats, plays out as an incredibly reflective piece of art: constantly asking itself where it belongs within the newest wave of electronica and melding both old and new sounds into a creamy slow burn.
And while the imprint of future leaning artists is present, particularly from peers such as Slushii or k?d, much of the blueprint for "What I Know Now" also comes from pop icons like Tinashe (specifically tracks like "2 On"). The classic house organ that layers on top of a full low end carries the tune while Yakima's vocals, panning between attuned croons and sweet, breathy bursts, gives the levity and the track its life source.
This is pop music beating itself at its own game - and making a stand in an era where having your voice heard is as essential as breathing.
