Why do we like this?
Do you remember what it was like when you were seven and thought your parents were taking you for ice cream, and then they took you to ice cream and a movie?
Well, it's kind of the same feeling as when you're out and find yourself double fisting a whiskey rocks in one hand and an IPA in the other. Double treats never felt so good, and last night, when I wasn't even expecting it, I was totally blindsided and got both Nico Vega and Saint Motel.
I went to see Nico Vega at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco and came out a lover of Saint Motel as well. Saint who? Yeah, it's time wake the fuck up and start listening to Saint Motel.
Complete and utter stage presence? Check. Somewhat matching white tuxedos shirts? Check. Jumping, interacting, sweating and fucking loving it? Check!
This Los Angeles-based band currently has a six-track EP out called ForPlay; I'd say half amazing and brilliant and half outdated. In reality, what I'm anticipating is their new LP that they claim is dropping in the spring. I have baby shivers, because this is a band that will evolve -- they are already too evolved for where they're at now. So let's wait and see.
Here's the kicker, this a band who is not only competent enough to write and play music, but they direct their own music videos as well! I challenge you to watch some of the videos for the ForPlay EP. Don't be too critical, some are borderline amateur -- but do enjoy my favorites "Dear Dictator" and "Butch," featured below.
Saint Motel has played with the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Kid Cudi, Ghostland Observatory, Neon Trees, Shiny Toy Guns, Girl Talk, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Local Natives. My friends, mark my words"¦ this might be your new favorite band. See them live. Now.
