Shines is setting the bar high with this R&B (rhythm & bounce) flip of Sade's 1985 classic, "Jezebel."
Taking a step back, I first discovered Shines at an after-party for Mr. Oizo in Potrero Hill, San Francisco, where he mixed sub bass frequencies and chopped samples into a slow leaning bounce. He had a screen covering most of his body the entire set and no one seemed to know the artist's real name. The only information I got was that he's from L.A. -- so elusive and mysterious.
Shines' flip of Sade's "Jezebel" track is an elegant and masterful collage of the original, which is sonically a minty R&B jam.
This is Shines' first release since signing with Color Station, a record label based in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. The flip is available for free download on the artist's SoundCloud page, and keep current via Facebook.
