SXSW is the most incredible test for bands.
With the exception of a few exquisite showcases and permanent venues, most bands are challenged to exhibit their very best noise on a questionable semi-even surface within an office building or donut shop. The crowds before them are loud, drunk, and sleep deprived. The artists? Even more sleep deprived, juggling planes, trains, and automobiles to reach said “stage.”
Then they are tasked with woo’ing all of us away from our cocktail conversations during their 15 minutes of potential fame. It’s a terrible task. There are no acoustics to assist them. There are no strobing lights to set the mood.
And yet, they play.
On Friday, I found myself invited to one of these packed, “converted” office spaces downtown. A fledgling band from San Bernardino decided to give their all to a sloppy, albeit happy, crowd.
It was incredible.
Royaljag is twins Jay and Roland Garcia (vocals/guitar and bass), and David Ajoku (keys). Josh Gomez joined the band on drums. Together, they make “Chameleon Pop,” which is what they seem to call their swirling dreamy, synth-pop. Call it what you want, it’s spectacular. I danced. I made up words so I could sing along. It was love at first listen.
Also, the musicians are really endearing-- smiling and laughing to each other while they effortlessly seduce your attention away from whatever it is you’re doing.
They have ONE song on Soundcloud (!!!!!), but it’s a great one. Via Twitter, the band announced on January 22 that their debut EP is complete. There is more music coming, people. I’m going to find it and I’m going to share it with you.
For now, listen to this on repeat. And if you’re running around SXSW and hoping to hear the best new music in the world, start with them.
