If you aren't already aware of Melbourne's RKDA, let me be the one to introduce you to this enigmatic and bold musical trio. Bending your perception of what Australian electronic music sounds like today, these guys are paving their own way.
"Spaces" is their first full-length single. It follows on from the 1:50 "META," released in March this year.
Jarring at times, melodic at others, this is a captivating and occasionally unsettling piece of semi-industrial, progressive electronic.
The hypnotic vocal loop of "I need space / Just give me space / I need space" is an unnerving mantra -- one that, when coupled with those dark synths, served to remind me of the wonderful album Fever Ray by The Knife front-woman Karin Dreijer Andersson.
Only here, instead of exploring the dichotomy between soaring melodies and deep rhythms as we find on Andersson's record, the vocal layers are smudged into the industrial bass and synth rhythms, becoming part of a densely fluidic atmosphere.
