Why do we like this?

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Mike Milosh — better known by his professional alter-ego, Rhye — has by now mastered his own specific brand of melancholic dream-pop, and as the third single from his fourth studio album Home, “Come in Closer” is no exception.

This sunny little love song makes me think of first love. The endearing innocence, the stolen glances and discrete hand-holding, the butterflies in your tummy, and your heart swelling so much that you actually feel giddy. But beyond that, it brings to mind a sense of lasting love; of growing together, of learning from each other, of sharing, and of trust — and how the former leads into the latter. The airy, wistful melodies are the perfect complement to Milosh’s breathy, calming vocals. This track feels like the perfect cup of tea made by someone who loves you dearly on a lazy Sunday morning.

“Come in Closer” is adorable enough to make you swoon, even without the added gentle sweetness of the music video (which is essentially two blonde-haired little kids living out their idea of paradise, having outdoor adventures with each other and a couple of kittens,) and yet, somehow the combination of the two together sits just right. Milosh explains that children embody what love should be — living without fear or inhibition, blissful, joyful, and free, and the music video encapsulates that perfectly. It makes sense, when you consider it was co-directed by Milosh and his long-time partner, Genevieve Medow-Jenkins.

According to a press statement, Milosh shares the true meaning behind his latest release:

“As relationships deepen and you invite someone into your world, your life, your home, layers of appreciation, vulnerability, and patience reveal themselves.”

“Come in Closer" was released on 8 January 2021, and is just as pure as the intention behind it.
