Melbourne's Rat & Co has been a long-time favorite of this writer, with the band an early draw for me into the world of atmospheric electronica. With a couple of albums under their belt to date, the boys returned recently with new material, with "Spring II" following (the aptly named) "Spring I," which dropped just over a month ago.
As a huge supporter of the band, it's been interesting to see how their sound has developed while still staying rooted in what made it great to begin with. While the techniques and disciplines shift, their ability to create stirring soundscapes remains, and this is definitely true on their newest release. Cavernous and commanding, the track is as cinematic as they come.
After somewhat of a break from the boys since their Binary album in 2014, expect to hear a whole lot more material from the four-piece in the new year.
