Rat Boy may no longer be Essex’s best-kept secret, recently winning NME’s Best New Artist on the heels of a breakout year punctuated by his sophomore mixtape Neighbourhood Watch, but the 20-year-old shredder of both guitars and U.K. skate spots is only getting better with time.
His latest single, “Move,” sounds like an ADD-fueled tornado of auditory graffiti, a quintessential example of the organized chaos his rabid fan base can’t get enough of (his live shows are nuts). Poke around his site and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about – it’s like 1999 Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater reincarnated.
In Rat Boy’s scuffed up world of whimsical scrapbook art and crazed energy, anything and everything he experiences has a chance to be a part of his next DIY recipe, making him one of the most exciting acts out there. At the rate he’s going, a debut album shouldn’t be too far off, so be on the lookout if you like what you hear.
