Rainbow Kitten Surprise is an excellent example of why you should never judge a band or song by its title. When RKS crossed my ears, my gut reaction was to roll my eyes. With a mashup name of three of my favorite things, I assumed they sounded like a meme.
However, North Carolina’s quintet is no laughing matter. The band is startlingly serious, talented, and wildly intriguing.
Rainbow Kitten Surprise materialized in early 2013. The story goes that Sam Melo and Darrick "Bozzy" Keller were two college kids experimenting with sound. The duo’s first EP was born in an old dorm at Appalachian State University. They needed more. Welcome Ethan Goodpaster, Jess Haney, and Charlie Holt.
The band released an album and re-issued their EP, which is what you need to hear now.
“Devil Like Me” is a surprisingly stripped down and unflashy song. Hand claps, humming, and foot stomps pump the heart of this noise. And Melo’s voice can soar, at times reminiscent of the folk within acts like Edward Sharpe and Twin Shadow.
This sassy song has been floating between my ears all day. Leave your first impressions at the door, and draw your own conclusions.
