The female rapper from Los Angeles made her debut on the Netflix series, Rhythm + Flow, a music competition searching for the next rap star, featuring judges Chance the Rapper, Snoop Dogg, T.I., and Cardi B. From the likes of her track “Maria,” it sounds like Rae Khalil is just getting started.
She blends the raspiness of 070 Shake vocals with the swagger of Ms. Lauryn Hill to craft a space where her sound is authentic. The rhythm effortlessly glides immediately when you press play. After fifteen seconds, the beat shifts, revamps, and bursts into a world of deeper bass, heavier clap rhythms, and Khalil’s smooth vocals.
“Be my love, be my lady, let’s fly,” sings Khalil over laidback melodies. It’s simple, yet also an act of constant transcension as you dive deeper into the complex layers of the song. At 2:27, Khalil uses the sound of screeching car tires as a vessel for the track to explode into a luscious and reggae-infused dimension. Kicking into a new gear, “Maria” expands the track’s margins once again.
I hope you enjoy the listen. Xx
