Why do we like this?
"Loop Dreams" is why Quelle Chris is one of my favorites. He can channel a modern-day Shock G through humor and debauchery or get shroomed-out on some weird shit, but some of the strongest and most compelling Quelle material is personal and confessional.
Blue Mondays had painfully honest bars on wasted potential and frustrated love. Ghost At The Finish Line's first rap song is Quelle reflecting on the effects of his Blue Monday, wiser for the experience but not totally in a different boat. Without asking for a cookie or pitying himself, Quelle takes us through the very real hurdles of an artist outside the mainstream. From skewed perceptions of success from fans to ego-saving facades around the homies, being one of the hottest cats under the radar does not necessarily mean much when the house lights come on and you shut down your web browser. While it's not an uncommon topic, many MCs have tried turning their unglamorous pain into poetry, few can keep you engaged the way Quelle can. Chris Key's eerie piano loops and dusty drums help our man get in the zone and knock it out of the park.
Ghost At The Finish Line is one of the best rap albums that will be released in 2013. This is meat and potatoes hip-hop, raw raps and raw beats. All that extra shit is really for the birds at the end of the day.
