There’s something unique about “Sit Me Back Down” that makes it seem more like a piece of art than a typical song. Prince of Eden’s latest single feels like an audio version of a kaleidoscope, as layered vocals and synth instrumentals are stacked on top of each other, changing with every twist in the song. Instead of traditional verses and a tuneful chorus, the singer’s voice slides back and forth from a hushed volume to a scratchy belt. Using his soothing and haunting vocals, the California-based musician repeats the song’s title for about half the track in a way that feels inventive rather than lazy.
Prince of Eden has two albums, Purest Form, released in 2019, and The Tree That Bears Fruit in the Freedom That Bears You, released in 2018. Even with all that music to sift through, it’s still clear that this is his best work yet as he stretches far beyond mainstream sounds.
