Why do we like this?
Denver-based DeVotchKa will be releasing their fifth album, 100 Lovers, on February 15 via Anti-Records. Produced by Craig Schumacher, this record features guest percussions from Mauro Refosco of Thom Yorke's band Atoms For Peace and the musical manner of Calexico.
Front man Nick Urata's cinematic compositions have been his claim to fame in the past, and will only become greater as his career continues. The stylistic qualities encased in DeVotchKa's evocative soundtracks are emotionally powerful -- they spark a fire inside you and shake you to your core. This inferno of Eastern European folk, Mexican mariachi's, and indie rock (just to name a few) crafts a fusion genre all its own and offers a new exotic twist to this superlative band.
Whether Urata is singing fervent lyrics in Spanglish or crooning his heartbreaking melodies, it's hard to imagine that 100 Lovers could be anything but a romantic allegiance to someone you love. The sultry desires made evident throughout the course of the album only proves Devtochka's dedication towards heartfelt and emotionally-charged words. From start to finish, this album will engage you with its energetic and exciting sounds, tear at your heartstrings with brilliant words, and spoil you with cultural influences.
With a premise illustrated through musical composition, 100 Lovers is a soundscape of imagination, stimulating and bruiting, and exceptionally endearing. The final outcome is the band's most compelling album to date, filled with melodies fans will adore, songs to draw in new listeners, and exciting tracks that fit nicely into the soundtrack of our time.
