French band Portland is finally back! I was eagerly awaiting their return since their debut EP Deezy Daisy released in 2013 on Kitsuné, and I have to say they caught me off guard.
First, there was some change in the band composition as singer Lily Pejon was replaced by Julia Apache.
Then, the band is moving in a brand new direction; while "Deezy Daisy" was a delicious piece of candid and upbeat electro-pop, "Aphrodite" is somewhat darker, with R&B and even trap influences.
Portland has definitely grown more mature. The band his making a strong return, Julia Apache's voice is warmer, and the production more refined. Not sure if it's going to make me forget Lily Pejon's absence though, but it's a promising start.
Portland's new EP will drop next September on French label Opening Light Musique. Keep posted!
