Porches, a Brooklyn-based project led by Aaron Maine, released a new track, along with the announcement of signing to Domino Records. The same Domino Records that is home to indie powerhouses Arctic Monkeys, Animal Collective, Blood Orange, and Hot Chip. This has got me pretty excited for Porches' future, but not so much as the new song, "Hours."
For those unfamiliar with Porches, they're one of those bands that are kind of hard to put into a box. Their music often has a melancholy vibe that often puts on a meager smile. Listen to their debut, Slow Dance In The Cosmos, and I think you'll understand. For me, their music is best listened to in an above ground subway car going through Brooklyn or Queens after midnight.
And their track "Hours" is no exception to that nighttime vibe. While "Hours" is decidedly more steeped with house or dance influences, the song maintains Maine's effective crooning. The man has a unique voice that jives with my sad-boy tendencies.
"Hours" also features long time collaborator Frankie Cosmos, whose delicate vocals add an ethereal layer to the glimmering track. For me, this track is up there with Crystal Castles' and Twin Shadows' best.
