In the late 1970s, Mastercharge Records amassed a collection of underground garage and punk singles, recorded during the decade prior, and released them in the compilation dubbed Pebbles, Volume One: Artyfacts from the First Punk Era, which later became known simply as Pebbles. This was to be Volume 1 of the formidable Pebbles series -- a behemoth string of compilation releases, later also propagated by the AIP, BSD and ESD labels, which spanned 28 volumes released over the following decade.
Pebbles single-handedly brought over 800 garage and psychedelic rock recordings, which would otherwise have been lost to obscurity save for a handful of collectors, to the fore, using thematic exploration of psych and garage rock sub-genres such as surf and mod rock, and even venturing into reaches as far as German and Swedish releases.
In this playlist, we pay homage to the lo-fi psych fuzz that Pebbles so diligently disseminated, and collect a few artists that would have been just as at-home on a Pebbles release as they are on our indie garage/psych rock radar.
