Friday Five: Fall, Finally

We had some hot, muggy weeks here in New York. But finally, at long last, that magical chill of fall is in the air. Something about this particular change of season will forever remind me of the always-present anticipation of being a kid; the leaves change, the school year starts, and for whatever reason it feels like absolutely anything is possible. In my grown-up life, my feelings about fall are a little quieter. I relish in sweater-and-boots weather, love being able to pile on extra blankets, and nearly drown myself in hot cups of good tea. But it's the music that really makes things feel fall-like. I'm always drawn to folk tunes, but as the air crisps I find I have cravings for little else. Folk music tinged with a hint of melancholy is even better. Autumn signifies a beginning -- but also an end -- of what can sometimes feel like an endless summer. And I may be ready to embrace the new, but that's no reason to not relish in the sweet sentimentality of times passed. These tracks are what I've found myself listening to this past week, all favorites from past fall months. The Bill Callahan song may be my new favorite of the season
