Why do we like this?

Brighton quintet Phoria has just released their first single since 2014. Characterized by cinematic, visually evocative soundscapes, the bands' sound has constantly evolved since their 2010 debut, with "Melatonin" being the first taste of their debut album.

Appropriately named after a hormone that anticipates the daily onset of darkness, "Melatonin" is sweetly disturbing, yet pleasing to the ear. Liquid gold vocals, melodic guitar riffs, and ambient synth sounds transport the listener into a dark introspective place. Stiller moments counteract highly rhythmic interludes, thumping bass and drums fade into urgent, futuristic arpeggiated synths, and dense, intricate layers of sound fall away to the minimalism of only a few elements.

The track, like the DNA helix, spirals forward into the dream, and its release heralds the journey towards Phoria’s first full length album in 2016.

The band is just as impressive live, as I got to experience yesterday at a packed show in Berlin, with every note of every song played to perfection. I'm a fan.
