Why do we like this?
Phondupe is a production duo that originated in Sydney, but have recently spent their time globetrotting the world. After putting out their acclaimed debut EP Dinner Melts last year, the two members now find themselves living in different cities: New York and London. Rather than let this geographical divide slow them down, they've been working on new material, with a new single finding its way to me earlier today.
If "Proxy" is what we are to expect on Phondupe's new EP, I'd suggest more acts spend time apart. Elements of hip-hop, jazz, and funk are blended together to create a particularly smokey jam, topped off with almost-whispered vocals from NYC native Justin Dean Thomas. The smooth layering of textures gives it a really refined, worldly sound, which makes perfect sense when you consider their current locations.
The Greenhouse EP is scheduled for release later this year, but in the meantime you can pick up "Proxy" as a free download here.
