Why do we like this?
Well, someone grew up...
This soulful R&B/pop songstress has impressively done a 180 degree turn since her wildly successful debut album in 2004, when (as a sassy preteen) she precociously sang about heartbreak and young love. Fair warning: Jojo isn't 13 anymore. Ten years later, in a natural and authentic manner that neither shocks the senses nor comes off as too try-hard, this surprisingly underrated singer has beautifully transitioned into creating multi-faceted, modern, soulful tunes appealing to teens and young adults alike.
Although independently releasing mixtapes in recent years, this time she's put out a free EP, #LoveJo, as a Valentine's Day thank you to her fans for sticking with her throughout her seven-year album drought, during which she fought an ugly battle with her record label. Here, she covers Phil Collins' "Take Me Home" and gives it an ambient, urban flavor, which somehow stays true to the original. The hard-hitting beat contrasts nicely with her angelic voice, and vocally -- although not as apparent in this chill track -- she's undoubtedly in the big league (think mini Christina Aguilera with more edge).
